Highlight the reference(s) you want to insert, then click the Insert button at the bottom of the popup window. Enter search terms and the references containing the terms will be retrieved.
If you choose the Search option, click on the Search button (the magnifying glass over a closing quotation mark). See the screen shot below for illustration: You may change the style at any time as long as you have not converted the document to plain text. 
The corresponding reference(s) will be listed beneath REFERENCES in the style you chose. Highlight the reference(s) you want to insert, then click the Insert Citation button (the closing quotation mark icon on the top), your reference(s) will be inserted.
If you choose Go to EndNote, click Go to EndNote and you will be taken to your EndNote library. You may choose Go to EndNote or the Search button (the magnifying glass over a closing quotation mark) to insert references. In your document, place the cursor where you want to insert in-text citations. Write REFERENCES at the bottom of the document so that all the cited references will be listed beneath it. You may start your document by using one of the templates in EndNote (under the Tools menu) or you can start from scratch. Make sure the EndNote tab is displayed in Word. Select the references you want to transfer. Make sure that "EndNote Export" is now checked in the Edit -> Output Styles menu. Find the "EndNote Export" style and check it ON. If "EndNote Export" is not listed in the Edit -> Output Styles menu: Put '' \usepackage EndNote Export was not listed on your Output Styles menu? It is by far the best referencing package. I don't have a clue about other configurations but they should still work with this guide. This guide should work for other versions, unless Endnote have drastically changed something. There are a few points to make: I have used every EndNote version since 4, but when I did my thesis I used version 9. 
I had to figure all this out the hard way - by lots of trial and error, if you follow this guide it should be easy for you. I wrote this guide because I had many references in EndNote that I wanted to use in my LaTeX documents.
